Scholz Garten features a large, shaded beer garden and an adjoining hall marked by a stylized lyre sculpture on its roof. Established in eighteen sixty-six by August Scholz, a German immigrant and Civil War veteran, the tavern emerged from a property he originally purchased in eighteen sixty-two. It became a center for the city’s German population, offering a space for music, community gatherings, and debate during an era when German traditions heavily influenced the region.
