The Scarbrough Building is identifiable by its eight-story Chicago-style architecture, featuring a facade of masonry cladding over a steel frame that occupies the corner of Congress Avenue and Sixth Street. Completed in nineteen ten, this was Austin's first skyscraper, rising one hundred and ten feet above the city. Its construction marked a dramatic shift in local engineering, as the use of a concrete-and-steel frame was so novel that residents famously placed bets on whether the structure would remain upright or collapse entirely.
