Waller Creek Greenbelt

Waller Creek is a six-mile-long stream that cuts through the heart of Austin, defined by limestone cliffs and a history tied to the city’s founding. Named for Edwin Waller, the surveyor and first mayor of Austin, the creek marked the eastern boundary of the original city plan in eighteen thirty-nine. For generations, the area along its banks served as a home for immigrant communities and, after the Civil War, for formerly enslaved people who established enclaves like the Red River Community.
