The Driskill is easily recognized by its massive Romanesque Revival arches, built from pressed brick and limestone, which frame the porticos at the corner of Brazos and Sixth Street. This is the oldest operating hotel in Austin, opened in eighteen eighty-six by Colonel Jesse Driskill, a cattle baron who intended his hotel to be the finest in the country. He spent his fortune constructing a luxury landmark that would serve as a grand stage for the frontier town.
