Cathedral of the Madeleine

The Cathedral of the Madeleine is recognizable by its rough-cut sandstone walls and twin towers rising in the heart of Salt Lake City. Completed in nineteen oh nine, this Roman Catholic cathedral stands as the only one in the United States under the patronage of Saint Mary Magdalene. Bishop Lawrence Scanlan, the first bishop of Salt Lake, directed the construction of this Neo-Romanesque exterior, using funds largely provided by the silver and copper mines that drew many early Catholics to the Utah territory.
