Alta Club

The Alta Club is recognizable by the Italian Renaissance style of its three-story brick and stone clubhouse, which sits on the corner of South Temple and State Street. Founded in eighteen eighty-three by eighty-one local mining and industrial leaders, the organization was modeled after exclusive gentlemen’s clubs in cities like San Francisco. Its early years were shaped by the social divisions of the era, as the club initially excluded members of the Mormon faith, though it eventually moved toward greater inclusion.
