The McCune Mansion rises on Capitol Hill as a Victorian castle built of red Utah sandstone, with asymmetrical towers and steep roofs covered in imported Dutch tiles. Completed in nineteen oh one for the railroad and mining magnate Alfred McCune and his wife Elizabeth, the twenty-one-room residence cost one million dollars at the time. To ensure its opulence, the couple financed a two-year tour for their architect, S. C. Dallas, to collect design ideas across America and Europe.
