Salt Lake City Tabernacle

The Salt Lake Tabernacle is immediately recognizable by its low, elongated dome, a shape that earned it local nicknames ranging from a capsized boat to a turtle shell. Built between eighteen sixty-four and eighteen sixty-seven, the structure was an ambitious attempt by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to create a massive meeting place for their members. Civil engineer Henry Grow designed the roof using a system of wooden lattice-truss arches, which allowed the dome to span one hundred and fifty feet across without any internal columns to obstruct the congregation's view.
