The Social Hall Historical Marker

A glass and steel structure sits at the intersection of State Street and Social Hall Avenue, enclosing the original stone foundation of Utah's first theater. Built in eighteen fifty-two, only five years after Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, this site held the Social Hall. Designed under the direction of Brigham Young, the building functioned as a central recreation space for the community, hosting everything from plays and dances to sessions of the territorial legislature.
