CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research

The CSIRO Marine Laboratories at Castray Esplanade are identifiable by their deep-water port, which provides direct access for large research vessels to the Southern Ocean. Constructed between nineteen eighty-two and nineteen eighty-four, this complex replaced an earlier facility in New South Wales to consolidate Australia’s national marine science efforts in one location. The site includes a distinctive building known as the big yellow shed, which originally functioned as a cargo storage facility for Princes Wharf starting in nineteen fifty-three.
