The Bon Marche Arcade on Barrack Street is a four-story structure defined by its narrow, symmetrical facade and a distinctive, open-crown battlement parapet. Originally constructed in nineteen oh one as Brookman’s Buildings, it was built by property developer William Gordon Brookman, who had acquired his wealth in the gold mines of Kalgoorlie. Architect H. J. Prockter designed the building in the Federation Free Classical style, choosing a height that made it a prominent landmark at a time when most surrounding buildings were only one or two stories tall.
