Old Mill

historic

The Old Mill is a white, stone tower with four prominent brown sails located on Mill Point in South Perth. Built in eighteen thirty-five, it is the oldest surviving colonial structure in the Perth area. Engineer William Kernot Shenton commissioned the site to provide flour for the struggling Swan River Colony, with Governor James Stirling laying the foundation stone. The heavy four-tonne cogwheels inside were crafted from local tuart timber, an essential component for a machine that once ground over six hundred kilograms of wheat each day.
