The Plaza Theatre on Hay Street is marked by a narrow, three-story facade that creates a symbolic skyscraper effect through its vertical lines and geometric Art Deco patterns. When it opened on September seventeenth, nineteen thirty-seven, it introduced a new level of modern luxury to Perth as the city’s first purpose-designed Art Deco cinema. Built for the Hoyts company, the theatre replaced an older venue called the Majestic and became part of a larger arcade development that still connects Hay and Murray Streets today.
