McNess’ Royal Arcade stands at the corner of Hay and Barrack streets with a facade of ornate stucco pilasters, arched windows, and triangular pediments. Built in eighteen ninety-seven, this three-story structure represents the prosperity that flooded Perth during the gold boom. Its owner, Charles McNess, began his local career as a tinsmith and ironmonger on this very site, operating from five simple shops made of corrugated iron.
