The Perth Mint is an expansive Federation Romanesque building on Hay Street, recognizable by its ornate, colonial-era architecture that has stood since its opening in eighteen ninety-nine. Established during Western Australia's gold rushes to refine raw gold and mint sovereigns for the British Empire, it remains the oldest operating mint in Australia. Premier Sir John Forrest pushed for its creation, arguing that the territory needed its own facility to process gold rather than shipping it to Sydney or Melbourne.
