Council House is a thirteen-story modernist tower on St Georges Terrace that is defined by a repetitive pattern of T-shaped sunshades covering its facade. These large, concrete-encased features provide shade to the building's floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Architects Jeffrey Howlett and Donald Bailey designed the structure for a nationwide competition, and it officially opened on March twenty-fifth, nineteen sixty-three, when Queen Elizabeth the Second arrived to dedicate the new civic headquarters.
