The Palace Hotel is a three-story brick and iron building on the corner of Saint Georges Terrace and William Street, distinguished by its Federation Free Classical style, arched windows, and decorative colonnades. Constructed in eighteen ninety-seven at the height of the Western Australian gold rush, the hotel was built by mining entrepreneur John De Baun for sixty-four thousand pounds. It opened as a luxury destination for travelers and became a symbol of the city's sudden wealth and rapid expansion during that era.
