Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black People is distinguished by a blue limestone facade and two stone towers capped with tiled, bulbous structures. Located in the Pelourinho district of Salvador, this eighteen-century building was established by an Afro-Brazilian brotherhood of slaves and freedmen who were denied entry to the city’s other churches. Because the brotherhood lacked external funding, its members performed the construction themselves, often laboring at night after completing their required daily work.
