The Dique do Tororó is a large, man-made lagoon in the center of Salvador, immediately recognizable by the eight massive sculptures of Candomblé orixás that appear to float on the water. Built beginning in sixteen forty-two by damming the Lucaia River, the site was originally engineered as a defensive barrier to protect the city from invasion. Today, the water serves as the only natural reservoir in Salvador protected by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage.
