Largo Terreiro de Jesus

The Largo Terreiro de Jesus is defined by its black-and-white Portuguese tile pavement that ripples in geometric waves across the ground. Located in the oldest part of Salvador, the square takes its name from the Jesuit priests who arrived here in the sixteenth century and were granted land by Governor-General Tomé de Sousa. Under the guidance of Father Manuel da Nóbrega, the order built a chapel and a school, transforming this patch of the new city into a focal point for religious and civic life.
