Church of the Third Order of Mount Carmel

The Church of the Third Order of Mount Carmel occupies the top of the Ladeira do Carmo, separated from the street by a wide stone staircase. The facade consists of pale lioz stone imported from Portugal and features two towers with windows designed in the style of Queen Maria the First. The Third Order established itself in Bahia in sixteen thirty-six, but a fire in seventeen eighty-eight destroyed their original structure. Work on the present building began in seventeen eighty-eight and finished in eighteen oh three, although the towers and final decorative elements reached completion only in the middle of the nineteenth century.
