Elevador do Taboão

The Elevador do Taboão is defined by a twenty-eight-meter-high iron tower, constructed with intersecting iron bars that form symmetrical, parabolic curves. Inaugurated on January nineteenth, eighteen ninety-six, by the Linha Circular de Carris da Bahia company, it was designed to connect the upper city near the Pelourinho to the Comércio district below. The original machinery was manufactured in Newcastle, England, at the workshops of W. G. Armstrong, the same firm that produced equipment for the more famous Elevador Lacerda.
