Praça Maria Felipa is a large open space in the Comércio district that borders the Baía de Todos os Santos. This waterfront site sits directly at the base of the city's historic Elevador Lacerda and near the Mercado Modelo. While the plaza was established between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was renamed in twenty-twenty-four to honor Maria Felipa de Oliveira, an Afro-Brazilian woman who led a group of approximately two hundred people during the war for independence in Bahia.
