Largo do Pelourinho

Largo do Pelourinho is a sloping, triangle-shaped square paved with uneven cobblestones and ringed by brightly painted colonial mansions. It takes its name from the Portuguese word for a pillory, a wooden or stone column used for public punishment. For decades, this square was the final site in Salvador where the colonial authorities maintained a device for the public shaming and whipping of enslaved people.
