The Elevador Lacerda is a seventy-two-meter tall public urban elevator that bridges the steep divide between the historic Cidade Alta and the commercial Cidade Baixa. You can identify the structure by its two distinct towers, one of which cuts directly into the stone slope of the Ladeira da Montanha. Originally inaugurated in eighteen seventy-three as a hydraulic system, it was a project of the engineer Augusto Frederico de Lacerda and his brother, the businessman Antônio Francisco de Lacerda.
