New City Gas is defined by its thick stone masonry and expansive, industrial-scale roofs that occupy a prominent corner in the Griffintown neighborhood. Constructed between eighteen fifty-nine and eighteen sixty-one, the complex was designed by the architect John Ostell to process coal into gas for the illumination of Montreal’s streets and buildings.
