Tvrđava Lovrjenac / Lovrjenac Fortress

Lovrijenac Fortress stands on a sheer rock cliff thirty-seven meters above the Adriatic Sea, detached from the main walls of Dubrovnik. This triangular fortification guards the western entrance to the city, creating a dramatic gap between its own stone ramparts and the walls of the Old Town. Its walls facing the sea are twelve meters thick to withstand cannon fire, while those facing the city are a mere sixty centimeters thick, a design intended to ensure the Republic of Ragusa could easily destroy the fort from the city walls if a local commander ever attempted a coup.
