El Panecillo

The most recognizable feature of El Panecillo is the massive aluminum statue of the Virgin of Quito that crowns the hilltop, rising forty-five meters above the city. The hill itself, a volcanic peak reaching over three thousand meters above sea level, earned its name during the sixteenth century when Spanish colonists thought its rounded, loaf-like shape resembled a small bread roll.
