Plaza del Teatro

The Plaza del Teatro is defined by the Neoclassical façade of the Sucre National Theater, which features six Ionic columns and a pediment depicting Apollo surrounded by the nine Muses. While it is now a center for the performing arts, the space has a much older and rougher history. In the sixteenth century, the area was known as the Plazuela de las Carnicerías, or Butchers' Square, because it was surrounded by slaughterhouses.
