Quito Metropolitan Cathedral

religious

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito sits on the southwestern edge of the Plaza de la Independencia, marked by three domes covered in green ceramic tiles. Construction began in fifteen thirty-five, shortly after the city was founded, and it serves as the country's seniormost Catholic church. Its thick walls, built from volcanic stone hauled from Mount Pichincha, house the tombs of national figures, including the independence leader Antonio José de Sucre.
