The San Lázaro complex occupies a large colonial building at the intersection of Ambato and Rafael Barahona streets. Founded in seventeen eighty-five, it began as a hospice and leprosarium before serving for centuries as one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in Latin America. Its history remains woven into the collective memory of Quito, representing the evolution of mental health care in the country from early, often harsh confinement practices to modern outpatient services.
