Independence Square

Independence Square, often called Plaza Grande by locals, is marked by the tall Independence Monument standing at its very center. This bronze and stone memorial, commissioned by President Eloy Alfaro and unveiled in nineteen oh six, features a statue of Lady Liberty at its peak. It honors the patriots who made the first call for independence from Spanish rule on August tenth, eighteen oh nine.
