The Museo de la Ciudad occupies a sixteenth-century building defined by ancient stone Doric columns and four large internal courtyards. Originally established in fifteen sixty-five by order of the Spanish Crown, it served for over four hundred years as the Hospital of Our Merciful Lord Christ Jesus, later known as the San Juan de Dios Hospital. This institution functioned as a medical center and a house of charity, providing care to the city’s sick, homeless, and orphans from the colonial era through the late twentieth century.
