The Maison pompéienne once stood as a precise architectural reconstruction of an ancient Roman villa on Avenue Montaigne. Commissioned by Prince Jérôme Napoléon and completed in eighteen sixty, it was designed by architects Jacques Ignace Hittorff and Alfred-Nicolas Normand to mirror the Villa of Diomedes in Pompeii. The structure featured a central atrium with an impluvium to collect rainwater, and its interior was filled with classical paintings and marble busts of the Bonaparte family.
