Philosophenweg Start

The Philosophenweg, or Philosophers’ Walk, is a two-kilometer path winding along the southern slope of the Heiligenberg mountain, directly opposite the Heidelberg Castle. It is distinguished by its unique, mild microclimate, where exotic plants like palms, bamboo, and pomegranate trees grow in a landscape that feels more Mediterranean than central European. While today it is known for panoramic views over the Neckar River and the Old Town, the path began in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the simple Linsenbühlerweg, a track used by locals to reach their vineyards.
