Studentenkarzer

The Studentenkarzer, or student prison, is a small, unassuming building located at Augustinergasse two, tucked behind the Old University. It is identifiable by a hanging sign that displays a playful image of a cherub. From eighteen twenty-three until nineteen fourteen, this facility held university students who had committed minor infractions like public drunkenness, dueling, or driving the town pigs through the streets. Because the university held its own legal jurisdiction, it maintained this private jail to discipline its own scholars rather than handing them over to municipal authorities.
