The Alte Universität stands out for its long, baroque façade stretching between the busy Hauptstrasse and the open expanse of Universitätsplatz. Built between seventeen twelve and seventeen thirty-five by the architect Johann Adam Breunig, this building was originally named the Domus Wilhelmiana in honor of its donor, Elector Johann Wilhelm. It replaced an earlier college known as the Casimirianum, which had served the university since fifteen ninety-one.
