Barrel Building

The Barrel Building is a functional stone structure within the Heidelberg Castle complex, easily identified by the antique, oversized windows that line its facade. Inside its cellar sits the Great Heidelberg Tun, a massive oak wine vat that has come to define the building’s purpose over the last four centuries. While the current barrel was constructed in seventeen fifty-one, it represents the fourth iteration of such vessels installed here to store wine collected as tithes from regional vineyards.
