Old Bridge Heidelberg

The Karl Theodor Bridge, commonly known as the Old Bridge, spans the Neckar River with nine elegant red sandstone arches. Its most striking features are the twin towers at the southern entrance, which once served as a medieval city gate and prison. Built between seventeen eighty-six and seventeen eighty-eight by Elector Carl Theodor, the structure replaced eight wooden predecessors that had been repeatedly destroyed by floods and ice.
