Heidelberg Castle

Heidelberg Castle is recognizable by the red sandstone ruins that tower over the Neckar valley from the flank of Königstuhl hill. First mentioned in twelve twenty-five, the site served for centuries as the representative ancestral seat of the Palatine prince-electors. These rulers were among the most influential figures of the Holy Roman Empire, holding the power to elect the emperor himself. The complex evolved over hundreds of years, shifting from a medieval defensive structure into a grand Renaissance residence filled with opulent halls and elaborate facades.
