The opera house at Offenbachplatz is marked by its distinct post-war modernist design, featuring a prominent facade of exposed concrete and brickwork. Designed by the architect Wilhelm Riphahn, the building opened in nineteen fifty-seven as a deliberate shift away from the elaborate neo-baroque styles that had characterized the city's previous opera house. Riphahn, who was seventy years old when he completed the design, worked against a backdrop of professional exclusion during the national socialist era to create this central hub for Cologne’s cultural life.
