SchifffahrtMuseum

The SchifffahrtMuseum is housed within the Schlossturm, a distinctive round castle tower that marks the edge of the Burgplatz along the Rhine. Built originally in the thirteenth century as a defensive structure for the Dukes of Jülich-Kleve-Berg, this tower is the final surviving fragment of the grand Düsseldorf residential palace. The rest of the palace complex was largely consumed by a massive fire in eighteen seventy-two, leaving this masonry tower to stand alone as the only remnant of the city’s former royal residence.
