Königsallee is defined by a five-hundred-and-eighty-meter-long city moat that runs directly through its center, fed by the waters of the Düssel River. Often called the Kö by locals, this kilometer-long boulevard first opened in eighteen-oh-four following the removal of the city's old Baroque fortifications. Landscape architect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe and court architect Caspar Anton Huschberger designed the space as a grand urban esplanade, lining the canal with chestnut trees.
