The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen is defined by its exterior of polished, black granite, a distinct architectural landmark at Grabbeplatz. This state-owned museum was established in nineteen sixty-one by the government of North Rhine-Westphalia to serve as a public home for modern art. Its creation was, in part, a political act aimed at rebuilding the state’s cultural identity following the end of the Second World War.
