Church of Saint John Baptist

religious

The Church of Saint John the Baptist sits in the center of the village of Pontone, marked by a half-column that protrudes from its facade like a shelf. This stone feature, known as the column of justice, dates to the Middle Ages. In that era, residents who felt they had suffered an injustice or abuse of power from a king or nobleman could stand under this ledge to claim sanctuary. By doing so, they received protection from the local guild of wool weavers, who held authority to provide an impartial judgment.
