Bertha Wine Bar

Bertha Wine Bar sits on the corner of Church Street in the historic center of Stellenbosch. During the day, the space operates as a cafe called Meraki, but from four in the afternoon, it transforms into an establishment focused on the Bertha wine label. The bar is named for Bertha Bezuidenhout, the matriarch of the family that produces the wine. Her son, André, remembers her as a master of improvisation who once crafted makeshift sherbet for her children using icing sugar and antacid pills when money was tight.
