Praza de Cervantes

Praza de Cervantes is marked by a stone bust of the writer Miguel de Cervantes perched atop a tall column in its center. While the square now offers a quiet place for a coffee, it was for centuries the functional heart of Santiago de Compostela. During the Middle Ages, it was known as the Forum or Plaza del Campo and acted as the city’s primary marketplace, where bread and grain were traded under the supervision of local authorities.
