31 de Agosto Kalea stands out for its narrow proportions and cramped facades that contrast with the wider, neoclassical streets of the surrounding Old Town. This street earned its name following the siege of San Sebastián in eighteen thirteen, when British and Portuguese forces captured the city from French occupation. In the aftermath of the fighting, the invading troops looted and torched the town, destroying nearly every building in the area.
