Motako Gaztelua is a stone fortress crowned by a large statue of the Sacred Heart that towers over the summit of Mount Urgull. Established in eleven ninety-four by King Sancho the Seventh of Navarre, the castle was designed to protect the city against seaborne attacks and pirate raids. Its position high above the Bay of Biscay allowed it to monitor the coastline and oversee the defense of the developing city below.
