The English Cemetery

The English Cemetery clings to the verdant slopes of Mount Urgull, a quiet space where moss-covered headstones disappear into the shadows of the hillside. Established in the nineteenth century, this burial ground holds the remains of British soldiers who fought and died in the First Carlist War. Because many of these volunteers were Protestants, they could not be interred in local Catholic cemeteries, leading to their placement here on the mountain overlooking the sea.
